Copyediting & Proofreading

What does a copyeditor do?

Copyediting is about ensuring readability. A copyeditor will check for grammar, punctuation and spelling in a text. However, the copyeditor’s biggest job is to manage the style of writing throughout the text to ensure it is consistent, clear and follows the chosen style guide (i.e. Chicago Manual of Style, MLA). This may include:

  • Looking for inconsistencies in tone, spelling and formatting
  • Revising sentences for better clarity
  • Evaluating appropriate diction (word choice)
  • Checking for inconsistencies in overall argument or narrative

What does a proofreader do?

Proofreading is the final stage of editing before publication, right after copyediting. Where a copyeditor is concerned with writing style, a proofreader focuses on typographical errors. This may include:

  • Double checking the layout of a text for missing page numbers, misaligned text, inaccurate index, etc.
  • Looking for inconsistencies in fonts, highlights (such as bold and italics) and spacing
  • Correcting grammatical errors
